We started out our day by running to town to take our homeschool attendance report to the local board of Education. Since I had to stop and get the buttermilk that I forgot Friday, I decided to pick up the rare treat of ice cream. The kids were so excited. Funny how such little things can put a sweet smile on their faces.
After lunch, ice cream, and putting supper in the slow cooker, we retreated to the front porch to do a little school work. It was just too beautiful outside to stay cooped up inside! We read a chapter from Wheel on the School and George Muller: Guardian of Bristol's Orphans. Alissa drew a picture to illustrate the important events from the chapter we read in Wheel on the School and Jake colored a picture from The Pokey Little Puppy. As they worked, I spotted a plane flying quite low heading toward our field. I told the kids to wave. As we all waved, the pilot made the plane wave back! It was such a neat moment! We were all surprised the pilot actually saw us and responded! I guess when you live in a rural area like we do there isn't too much to look at when flying above. I guess looking at a house in an open field surrounded by woods was only natural. Anyway, even as the day was drawing to a close, Alissa was still talking about what a neat afternoon we had because of the plane.
After supper, we headed out to feed the animals and water the flowers. While watering, I noticed the weeds were going crazy. I started pulling weeds, but I soon realized I would never be able to get them all. So, I pulled just the weeds growing really close to or in the plants. Then I took drastic measures; I pulled out the spray bottle and vinegar! The war of the weeds has begun! It's my mission to win this year! A few of weeks ago Bill sprayed one bed with Round-Up (I cringe at the use of chemicals on the inside or outside of my home!). About a week later I sprayed another bed with the vinegar. My weeds died before his! We decided then that we would never use Round-Up again unless it was an absolute must! Now, if we can just figure out what to do about these monster ants!
As it turns out, it was a good thing that I got so much done today. I called Bill this evening after getting the kids in bed. He told me he would be bringing home our newest piglets! As I write, I am awaiting the arrival of Otis and Little No-Name. Little No-Name has no name because we will be raising him to slaughter. I can't allow myself to get attached to him or I will never be able to eat him! I can't wait until tomorrow when I can take pictures!
Until then, be blessed!
Today's moral: No matter how small we feel sometimes, God sees us, hears us, and cares for us. Just like the song says, "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me."
I have never thought of, nor heard of, using vinegar for the weeds! That's so cool! If the weeds are close to a plant, do you have to protect the plant from the vinegar?
ReplyDeleteI learned the vinegar trick from Facebook and Pinterest. You do have to be careful when spraying close to plants. The vinegar isn't selective. I have found it is just easier to pull the weeds closest to the plants and spray the rest. Try it! You'll think at first it isn't working, but just give it a day. It doesn't prevent weeds, but for me, the peace of mind it brings is worth the extra work I have to put into re-spraying!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I just discovered the vinegar thing this year, I add some salt as well and a little water.
ReplyDeleteooo...what a great idea! Is there any certain amount you use or do you just "eyeball it?"
ReplyDeleteSplashes of salt............how do you do pinterest? I've looked at it with interest, but I need to decide what is worth my computer time!
ReplyDeleteI like to think of it as my online filing cabinet. When I run across ideas on the internet that I want to remember or try, I add them to one of my boards. I think of the boards as individual file folders in the filing cabinet. I have a board for recipes, crafts, photography ideas, garden and farm matters, qoutes, organization ideas, etc... Most of the time, my posts come from my friends/aquaintances. You do have to have an invitation from someone, but their is no charge. If you want an invitation, let me know. I'll be glad to send you one.
